A hestoric event took place on Sparks Street in front of the Secretariat on 20th December 1938. A large number of University students and High School students headed by the Rangoon University Students' Union (R.U.S.U.) demonstrated the British Colonial Government in protest against the unijustly capture of two student leaders Ko Ba Hein and Ko Ba Swe at Magwe in central Myanmar by closing all the gates of the Secretariat thereby making the bureaucratic administrative machinery to be ceased temporarily. Jusdon College student leader Aung Kyaw succumbed to his injuries when he received the baten charges of the policemen. Hence, Sparks Street has become Bo Aung Kyaw Street in honour of the late student leader Aung Kyaw.
